How to Install Milestone 1 CM 11 on Google Nexus 5

So you have the Google Nexus 5; are you satisfied by its performances? Are you considering in changing something, well at least if you were able to? Well, let me help you out a little bit. How about a custom ROM firmware? Yes, I know that your Nexus 5 is running on the latest Android 4.4 KitKat OS, but aren’t you tired of the pure Android system? If you are and if you will rather try something else instead, then I recommend you the Milestone build of CM 11 custom ROM firmware.
Cyanogenmod is one of the best custom ROM that is available for the Android platform. The firmware is extremely popular among worldwide Android users, the system being compatible with almost all the handsets out there (mid-range, low range and also high end smartphones and tablets). Now, even though the official CM 11 firmware hasn’t been yet released, you can already embrace the Milestone build of the same and all thanks to those of xda-developers who had provided us with this version of CM11 custom ROM that is compatible with the LG Google Nexus 5.
Is it safe to install CM 11 M1 on your Google Nexus 5? Even though we are not dealing with an official Android update and even though this is not the official CM11 release, it is safe to complete this tutorial. According to those who have already installed the firmware, the Android 4.4 KitKat software is stable and smoothly runs on the Nexus 5. If there are bugs, there are only minor issues, so the system can be flashed for a daily use.
But since CM 11 represents a free aftermarket distribution of Android 4.4, by installing the custom ROM your LG Nexus 5 warranty will get void. Unfortunately this can’t be avoided because this is an unofficial operation. Due to same reasons this process should be considered complex and somehow risky (nothing bad is happening if you are following the guidelines from this step by step guide though).
Related to M1 build of CM 11, you should know that once the firmware will be installed on your Google Nexus 5, you will be able to receive more power and speed from your phone. Furthermore, the battery life will be increased and the web browsing experience improved. Also, the default KitKat UI will be replaced with the CM11 user interface and you will be able to customize the looks by your own taste. This is possible because CM 11 M1 is coming with both stock and extra (that cannot be found on the default version of KitKat OS) features, apps and capabilities.
If you have decided to complete this tutorial, then you first have to complete the pre requisites list from below.
  • Root your Nexus 5.
  • Install a custom recovery image on your phone. Use CWM or TWRP recovery.
  • Backup the Nexus 5 data.
  • Also make a Nandroid backup.
  • Ensure that you can use a computer or notebook.
  • Your handset and its USB cable will be required.
  • On both computer and device you need to temporarily deactivate the security protection.
  • On your phone you need to enable USB debugging from path “menu – settings – developer options”.
  • Your smartphone must have at least 50% power left; if not you need to charge your device before going any further.
  • Install CM 11 M1 by using this guide only if you own the LG Google Nexus 5 smartphone because the present tutorial is compatible only with the same.
The warranty of your Nexus 5 will get void once you will start the root process. Gaining root access and installing a custom recovery image are unofficial operations that have nothing to do with Google or with LG. But you need to complete these operations because CM 11 must access some in built programs from your phone and because the CM 11 M1 zip file can be installed only by using CWM or TWRP recovery. Don’t worry though as you can return the warranty afterwards; all you have to do is to re-install the official Android 4.4 KitKat OS on your device.
You have to install CWM or TWRP recovery because the firmware has been tested only by using these apps. So, avoid the unpleasant situations by using the same. Then, the backup is recommended because a wipe will be required (else CM11 will not work properly on your Google Nexus 5). You should backup everything that’s important for you including personal data, info and accounts. Also, do the Nandroid backup by using the custom recovery as this is the only way in which you can save the current ROM of your device.
You need to plug in the charger before starting the proper guide because if your phone gets turned off in the middle of the update operation, it might get damaged or bricked. Also, the security protection must be deactivated because sometime the antivirus tools are interfering or even interrupting the update operation, so don’t worry your device will not be infected during the installation procedure.

How to Install Milestone 1 CM 11 on Google Nexus 5

  1. Download the CM11 firmware file from this page.
  2. From here download the Google apps package.
  3. Google apps must be installed separately because the same is not included on the Android 4.4 update file.
  4. Good, now save these files on your computer; don’t unzip anything.
  5. Next, take your Nexus 5 and its USB cable and by using both connect your device with the computer.
  6. Then, copy paste or drag and drop the downloaded files from computer to your phone.
  7. Remove the USB cable and turn off your Nexus 5.
  8. Now enter recovery mode on your Android device.
  9. Use the recovery mode first for performing the following: “wipe data factory reset”, “wipe cache partition” and “wipe dalvick cache”.
  10. Then return to main menu of recovery.
  11. And select “install zip from SD card” followed by “choose zip from SD card”.
  12. Pick the CM 11 M1 file and flash the ROM.
  13. Repeat this step if you want to install Google Apps package too.
  14. Wait while the files are being flashed.
  15. And in the end select “+++go back+++” followed by “reboot system now”.
  16. If instead of Android OS you will be stuck in a boot loop, return to recovery and select “wipe data factory reset” and “wipe cache partition”.
  17. Also, if you want to restore the previous ROM, from recovery select “backup / restore” and follow the prompts.
  18. For resolving any other problems, try this step by step guide.
